Making it Big was created by Sam Lightstone. Sam is also Program Director and Senior Technical Staff Member with IBM’s Software Group where he works on product strategy and architecture, career mentoring, and recruitment for one of IBM’s most successful software products. Over the past 17 years he has lectured and held briefings for dozens of Fortune 500 companies, industrial and scientific conferences, and major universities on topics related to careers, technology trends, emerging research needs, autonomic computing and self-managing database systems. Sam has been quoted in eWeek, InformationWeek, InfoWorld, and the MIT Technology Review.  He is recipient of the IBM Outstanding Leadership Award and recipient of three IBM corporate technical awards for Outstanding Technical Achievement. As a technical leader, project manager and recruiter Sam has excelled at leading teams. His management career has spanned small high performance applied research teams up to large scale projects with over 200 staff across multiple geographies. In 2003 he was elected to the Canadian Technical Excellence Council the Canadian affiliate of the IBM Academy of Technology. Sam is an IBM Master Inventor with over 30 patents and patents pending. He is co-author of four books.

Sam has B.Sc. Eng. of Applied Science in Electrical Engineering from Queen’s University and an M.Math in Computer Science from the University of Waterloo. He is a former competitive foil fencer, and enjoys cycling and playing guitar.
